Honest Information about B.tox Injections

September 18th, 2009

Sydney Botulinum therapy (BoTox for short) is swiftly becoming the latest thing in Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming a beauty routine must for many in the Harbour City. However I never fail to be surprised by the rumours surrounding this treatment. I have outlined below a selection of the common myths that I encounter all the time at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a physician.

Myth no. 1: I will lose my facial expressions!

The human face has 60 or so muscles. Their unrelenting use may result in lines to appear. If surplus BoTox has been employed the muscular structure that are responsible for the expression of emotions can sometimes become over relaxed. The dose used by most doctors are designed to make you appear ‘refreshed’, nevertheless you will still be just as expressive.

So by injecting conservative quantities of the wrinkle injection in exactly the right muscles one will have a softening of any fine lines and wrinkles without any reduction in facial expression.

Myth no. 2: BoTox is poisonous!
There is some truth in this. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the correct pharmaceutical terminology. An overdose can end up in a decrease in muscle tone or may even cause sickness.

Chemists have a well-known phrase ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. A large dosage of any medicine will bring on illness. If you drink too much water it can result in death.

Myth no. 3: BoTox will be painful!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the doctor will use a hypodermic needle smaller than hair. Many people have said that the treatments are not worse than mosquito bites. For Certain not as sore as having a vaccination.

Myth no. 4: BoTox will deaden my face!
This is totally untrue. BoTox works on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on sensate nerve fibers. Just the ability to relax your muscles is affected by BoTox.

Myth no. 5. You must keep having BoTox or you will have even worse fine lines and wrinkles than ever!
Once More this is just false.

The first treatment will be effective for about three months. Any treatments after the initial one commonly last a few weeks more. The lines will gradually re-emerge as the muscle returns to normal. But they will certainly be no worse than before.

In fact the lines should be be less pronounced than if you had never undergone BoTox - even if you don’t repeat the therapy. This, of course is generally the case due to the fact you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
