Some Clues on Legislation Safety

August 12th, 2009

It’s still a common misconception in more than a few businesses that, by giving each member of staff training in workplace safety, they are sufficiently equipped to cope with a crisis. The truth is that, regardless of the industry you’re in, staff need much more than simply basic training in safety regulations and risk assessment. You need to provide your employees with an enthusiastic supervisor, not to mention equip them adequately and give them the opportunity to practice. A supervisor has a bigger purpose to fulfill than just supervising the work environment. A supervisor needs to be very enthusiastic, they should also think that training is fundamental. As well as enforcing health and safety legislation, a supervisory role also almost always includes checking up on employee performance levels. This is no simple undertaking. Good industry knowledge is required in a supervisory job as well as an in-depth knowledge of current regulations with regard to safety, risk appraisal and CPR.

It just is not enough to send your staff on a health and safety course. They must practise risk assessment and the recognition of hazardous areas. They have to know the best method of eliminating safety hazards as well as how best to react if the unexpected happens. Staff are only protected when their training and procedures have become automatic. Safety equipment is every bit as important to the your staff’s safety as training. When they don’t possess the appropriate supplies or alternatively if staff see that items are not functioning correctly only after something has happened, then all the education they have completed will have been in vain. You must check all your apparatus regularly to make sure that you have all of the essential equipment and that all the supplies are working properly. If you find something is in less than perfect working order, ensure it is mended or serviced as soon as possible.

Appropriate health and safety instruction is essential to the well being of your workers, but they also need to have decent gear, the opportunity to practise, and a supervisor who is gifted with infectious enthusiasm. And then observing the safety regulations soon become a natural part of life in the workplace instead of something for the workforce to think about all the time.
