Ski Vacations for the Carbon Minded Tourist

April 12th, 2009

Many avid snowboarders will shortly be looking for their skiing gear and darting forth looking for the greatest snow. And doubtless the result of our carbon footprint will be almost as far down the list of holiday to dos as a Christmas cracker after the Christmas holidays. Only last year, a tardy snow was in the headlines and tourists were panicky about the flecks of snow melting nearly as soon as they put down.

Skiing holiday organisation Chalet 1802, based at the foot of Monte Bianco in Chamonix Mont Blanc in the Alps, is one of the only independent firms to go carbon neutral and provide snowboarders an environmentally friendly alternative while reserving their ski vacations. Chalet 1802 founder ADISA stated: Last season was a bit of a surprise with the most warm wintertime in 55 yrs in the French Alps. French ski areas like La Grave, Verchaix and Alpe d’Huez has difficulty. It was temperate and the snowfall did not settle so a lot of the early winter ski season in the mountains was limited. We determined to become carbon neutral to assist in the preservation the snowboarding resort.

ADISA said: We are not attempting to dictate to guests only I think its valuable to grant the clients the choice without raising the cost of the holiday. When the guest book with us and takes his annual leave in our skiing chalet they may further off-set their carbon footprint and we soak up the additional prices. Of course we still have a sauna and a hot tub - people want lavishness but not at the expense of the surroundings, so we viewed ways of decreasing the impact of a client driving over here for a skiing holiday.”

Chalet 1802 have moreover joined with group Climate Care, which tackles global warming by making carbon dioxide deductions on behalf of individuals and firms.
