Holding on to Faith in the Midst of Tragedy

In the face of all the images of pain and suffering coming from Louisiana,it is only natural to turn to God and ask, Why? Where are you, God, as these people’s lives are torn apart? Why did you allow nature to unleash her fury? It is tempting to look at this as somehow God’s punishment or to determine that God doesn’t care, or that maybe there is no God because a good God could never allow this to happen.

There are no easy answers and perhaps no answers at all this side of heaven. It is on days such as this that faith is truly tested. We know that evil exists. We know that nature is not always kind. Yet, in the face of those realities, do we still believe in a good God? Do we believe that God is there amidst the agony? Do we trust that God can somehow bring some good out of this indescribable pain?

As Christians, we profess our faith in Jesus Christ who died on the cross. Indeed, we do have a God that understands suffering and abandonment as he cried out to His Father,
