Katharine Hepburn

January 29th, 2009

Born in Hartford, Connecticut on May 12, 1907, Katharine Houghton Hepburn was raised by her parents to fully speak her mind.

The great actress fell into depression in her earlier years when she found her brother Tom — who she was close to — hanging on a rope one day in 1921.

Katharine’s acting career began at Bryn Mawr College. After college, she met a producer and was cast in several plays. Though her early forays into professional theater were unsuccessful, Katharine bounced back as the Amazon princess in The Warrior’s Husband on Broadway. Her impressive performance landed her a role in the movie A Bill of Divorcement. A number of movie offers came in after that and although Katharine suffered a series of box office losses mainly due to her anti-Hollywood attitude, she bounced back with well-received films and magnificent performances.

Over the years, Katharine garnered numerous acting nominations and received 4 Academy Awards for Best Actress.

In the 80’s, Katharine made several TV-movies. In 1991, she came out with an autobiographical book aptly titled Me. She retired from acting in 1994.

Katharine died in Connecticut at the age of 96.

In her honor, the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and Theater in Connecticut will open its doors in 2009.
