Poker Addicts and Professional Help
December 5th, 2008
Despite the growing attention on poker addiction, very few players will seek professional help for their problem. A recent study shows that approximately 1 out of every 50 players will talk to a professional about their feelings towards poker. That means that 49 out of every 50 players will keep their emotions to themselves.
This is an extremely dangerous situation. Many addicted poker players do not even know the danger that they are in until they have a chance to consult with a professional. A trained therapist has the ability to see the situation as an unemotional outsider, an option not available to a player in the middle of a tilt. They can also see if a player is allowing their time at the poker table to spill over into other areas of their life. Poker players have great difficulty self diagnosing, so it is very important that all players talk to a professional about their feelings towards poker. Who knows, it may save you a lot of trouble in the long run if you are able to catch an addiction early.
Due to the traditional gap between poker players and professional therapists, counselors are being trained to ask their patients about their gambling habits. In most cases a therapist can recognize an addiction from the way a patient refers to the game and the emotions that they attract to the gaming experience.
